Photoshop running under Wine / Linux

I finally got around to setting up Photoshop 7 properly - everything seems to be working. Not only that, but this is the fastest I' ve ever seen photoshop - filters don't "progress", they happen. Instantaneously.

I had some trouble with "Save to web" initially, but I found a fix for that (it was a pathing problem).

The window placement still seems a bit wonky (photoshop windows don't respect the viewport), but that's not a big deal at all for me.

I'd like to try and get Photoshop CS2 running next (I'm stuck on an "invalid serial number" error - even though I have a valid serial). It's not that GIMP doesn't work the way it should - it's an awesome program and I'll continue to use it. There are just a couple features that really matter to me in Photoshop that aren't there (yet!) in GIMP / GIMPShop. When my needs are lightweight, though, I'll probably still be loading up the GIMP instead of Photoshop.

Beryl 0.2.0 rc1... Well, this changes everything. | Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Beryl 0.2.0 rc1... Well, this changes everything.

The Beryl folks seems to finally have gotten "Screen size multiplier" (read: adjustable number of viewports / virtual desktops) with proper geometry, sizing and scaling down right. At least it seems to be working great on my machine now.

Nonagons anyone? ;)

While this doesn't really change the way I work (I sort my apps by category, not project. Web on 1, Chat / IM / Voice / Bluetooth phone stuff / Email / on 3, etc) since I only really need 3 - 4 different desktops at a given time, it opens up a whole can of productivity worms when I need to have multiple instances of the same app, or apps that need multiple windows open, such as the Gimp.

I also made the discovery that enabling Anti-aliasing in the nVidia driver (proprietary, so sue me. ha!) actually applies it to the AIGLX desktop itself - duhhh. That means no more jaggies on the desktop or during 3D / OpenGL screen transformation. And at 1920x1200, that means the sharpest desktop I have ever seen. Ever. Just take one look at that original size.

"But Windows Vista has Hal 9000 built-in!"

"And OS X Leopard has a glorified backup (yay?) with a purdy interface (built on a BSD franken-core)!"

Who knows - maybe they'll get functional desktops in their next releases? OS X cougar? lion? wildcat? :p

Raw meat is good for you. | Sunday, February 4th, 2007

Raw meat is good for you.

Homemade sicilian prosciutto - raw meat cured with sea salt and spices hanging upside-down in my sister's father-in-law's cellar for two years.

It's not thinly sliced, covered in nitrates and then rinsed off like the commercial prosciutto you find at the supermarket. This is the real deal.

Being essentially uncooked, the meat is especially chewy - this is (maybe...) the closest I'll ever get to feeling like the king of the jungle feasting on his prey.

Prosciutto plus Chilean red wine times Camembert divided by fresh melon equals awesome.
